blakroc

Some of yinz probably know about this already, but this looks like a really sweet project between the Black Keys and a couple handfuls of hip-hop luminaries. Check it out!

bob dylan if he were into dub and sippin on that sizzurp

i had an idea for this kind of recording circle with some friends which involves each person recording a track and then kind of "passing it to the left" and having that person overdub - and just continuing in that vein until we had a bunch of finished tracks. anyways, I was just messing about trying to figure out what song to record and laid this down - and then made it crazy with garageband filters.

Download here!

Edit: I was thinking, if Madlib can record like 5 albums as Quasimoto, which is essentially Madlib with his voice sped up, maybe I should come up with some silly handle for this and record an "album." Any suggestions?

Learning by Heart

Learning by Heart:Lessons to Free the Creative Spirit was written by Corita Kent and Jan Steward and published in the early 90's. In terms of workbooks, It is a cult favorite.

The book was re-published earlier this year.
It is an honor to have my name printed in the book that has inspired so many incredible artists and educators.

We had an event in the spirit of the Mary's Day happenings Corita had in the 1960's in honor of the re- release:

1960's

2009

Random selection from Learning By Heart:

NOTHING IS THE SAME
When we give names to things, we often assume that everything that goes by that name is alike.
assignment:
Take something in nature- two dandelions- and look at them for five minutes, listing how they are different from each other. Take two leaves from the same tree and do the same thing. Nothing is the same. No thing is the same. Everything is itself and one of a kind.
After doing this for a week, look back at these pairs of things again and make a new list. You will find more differences because you have been exercising your powers of observation.
Genius is looking at things in an unhabitual way.
Work in areas where you are unsure, in places you've not been before.

I too saw an opening

So I went to an opening this weekend as well, here in Chi-city, of the work of Jonas Wood at Shane Campbell's gallery. Lots of nice paintings of nifty topics. Apologies in advance for shitty photos, I was rockin the iphone.

Had the pleasure of talking with the artist, the galler-ist, and most interestingly, the artist's Dad. Poppa Wood is an architect, and also let me in on the details about where some of the paintings are set, as the scenes depicted take place in his house! Unfortunately I didn't get a picture, but he was wearing this sweet yellow striped tie, and I mentioned it could fit into the picture above and he said that was intentional because he got it to match the paint in that room - goldenrod something or other.

These two were facing each other across the gallery, which was a very nice touch. Good lookin show.

Openings

Been out to some openings last weekend and thought I'd post some pics from a couple highlights.
This is Brian Bress at Cherry & Martin in Culver City, rock rockin it.

There was a video as well, awesome Brian stylie, check out his stuff on the web, at his site, youtube I bet etc.
Another highlight was Joshua Callaghan upstairs at Steve Turner. My fav use of that space so far; I love getting to step through the hand truck it's so tight. Excellent and thoughtful as usual from Josh.

LEAVE THE LAND ALONE

Bruce Nauman Untitled (Leave the Land Alone) 1969/2009
Produced by the Armory center for the Arts, Pasadena 9/12/09
The layered text resulting from multiple plane trips was especially beautiful.
The Armory does amazing work.
Nauman's project launches installations inside/out, an exhibition to celebrate the Armory's 20th anniversary. Lots of cool things are in the works! If you happen to be in Los Angeles/ Pasadena you should check it out.

Found

I found this several years ago when I was working for my Dad and we were demo-ing a kitchen. Upon taking out a countertop and the cabinets underneath it, this was left over, lying on the floor. I was speechless for about an hour, I think.

stu-stu-studioooo

whatup from chicago!

So I'm in my studio. It is awesome. I mean, it isn't ground breaking, or anything like that as far as studios go. Actually it is kind of small. But I'm psyched. Here are some pictures. Hopefully there will be many to follow in a fast and furious manner.
